SKINCARE | Getting “Fillumed” with Indeed Labs Volumizing Moisturizer and Serum! #IndeedLabsxCBB

Exclusive to Shoppers Drug Mart in Canada, Canadian skincare company Indeed Labs has been on my skin radar for about 2 years. From the straightforward, attractive packaging to incredibly reasonable pricing for what looks to be some cutting edge skin technology, getting “fillumed” sounded like an awesome skin weekend! With the goal to get rid of marketing jargon and focus on skincare that delivers nothing but real results at a cost-friendly price, Indeed Labs sounded like a company I NEEDED to get to know. With a couple of well-loved products in its assortment, like Nanoblur and the Hydraluron series, already it seemed like the right time to launch not just one, but TWO other must-have products! Launched this September, the fillume Volumizing Duo focuses on those whose main skin concerns are loss of volume and elasticity. The word “fillume” almost makes sense now that I know what the line is intended to do!

Indeed Labs Fillume Nanoblur Reviews

The Volumizing Serum* ($29.99 CDN) is all about plumping those areas of the skin that have lost their “pizzaz” over the years including smile lines and forehead furrows. Five clinically proven peptides, including something called “Linefill”, a natural active produced from sesame seeds, work to leave skin feeling firmer while restoring facial contours.

Indeed Labs Fillume Volumizing Serum Review
When it comes to skincare, when I see claims like these the very thing I look for is silicone which is actually ingredient #3, #4, #7 and #8. While I believe silicones have their place in skincare, I cannot help but feel like they are doing most of the “wrinkle-smoothing”. In fact, there is also an ingredient I have never heard of called Pullulan, about halfway down the ingredient list, that is produced from the starch of a fungus. It is used in anti-aging products because of its ability to provide an instant tightening effect as it adheres to the skin as well as forming a sheer film on the skin that improves both its appearance and texture. It also gives formulas a much smoother feel which is something I enjoyed about this serum (Truth in Aging, 2015). The peptides are present, but closer to the end of the ingredient list which may or may not be good depending on how high the concentration of peptides needs to be in order to have an effect on our skin.

Indeed Labs Fillume Volumizing Serum Review (5)

So, while this serum did in fact make my skin look more even, I do feel like like a large part of that was due to the presence of silicones. The texture was very nice though as it was a cooling gel that just melted into my skin and made me feel quite refreshed (thank you Hydroxyethyl Acrylate/Sodium Acryloyldimethyl Taurate Copolymer!) This serum had the perfect consistency for priming skin for makeup application making it a go-to first step in the mornings for me.

Indeed Labs Fillume Volumizing Serum Review (6)

I always think of serum as the “potent stuff” as it is usually the most expensive product in any skincare regime. Moisturizer is what “caps” everything in and also gives skin that bounce. The Volumizing Moisturizer* ($24.99 CDN) works to increase hydration and improve the overall tone and texture of the skin using sesame seed extract, hyaluronic acid and something called Sym3D, that stimulates fat cells to rebuild volume.

Indeed Labs Fillume Volumizing Moisturizer Review

Indeed Labs Fillume Volumizing Moisturizer Review (1)
The dispensing system is one of my favourites as you simply push and then wipe off what you need. It seems much more hygenic than an open pot and no unused product is exposed to air. Though the instructions say to use a pea-sized amount, I found that it was not hydrating enough for me and I had to top up with a facial oil at night.

Indeed Labs Fillume Volumizing Moisturizer Review (2)

It was tough to find information on what Sym3D is actually composed of and though I suspect it is the ingredient with the longest name, I cannot be sure. The texture of the moisturizer is similar to the serum in that it feels refreshing and does not leave a greasiness to the skin. The only silicone in this moisturizer is dimethicone which I suspect is present more for texture than for smoothing out and plumping up skin as this was the main responsibility of the serum.

Indeed Labs Fillume Volumizing Moisturizer Review (3)

Final verdict: Though I agree that both the serum and moisturizer do what they claim in terms of plumping the skin and improving texture, I am again very torn as to whether the results are long-lasting because of the number of silicones in the serum especially. When I worked in skincare, a question I would ask my clients is whether they wanted smoother skin NOW or later and surprisingly (or unsurprisingly) most clients said NOW. This fillume Volumizing Duo is the NOW solution. Your skin will look better within the day and foundation will apply beautifully. It all depends on what you’re looking for and the Indeed Labs products are not incredibly affordable for what they do, but are also free of phthalates, parabens, sulfates and colourants. There are a number of Indeed products that I will certainly still look into, like their exfoliator and Nanoblur (review for that soon!) even though this duo didn’t quite do it for me in terms of ingredients.

Thoughts on getting “fillumed”? What have you tried from Indeed Labs that I should try next?

BATH & BODY | Lush Love Fall 2015 with New Shower Jellies and Scrubs!

I think no matter how old I get, I will always be excited whenever new products from Lush get released. The sight of those black jars makes me want to hop into the shower or rediscover the joys of taking a bath. As Lush is our CBB Brand of the Month and I have yet to talk about Lush this month, even though I have been devouring their products like a madwoman, here are a couple of products I have been loving!

Lush Fall 2015 Review

Lush Shower Jelly Review

I have a stockpile of Lush Shower Jellies and have not met a jelly I did not like. It has been awhile since Lush has released some permanent additions to their Shower Jelly line so I leapt with joy when I saw 93,000 Miles* ($6.95 CDN) and Needles and Pine* ($8.95 CDN)! Made with eucalyptus, mint, cinnamon leaf and peppermint oil, 93,000 Miles is a spicy shower gel that both invigorates and soothes the senses and any sore muscles. This is such a great treat after a day at work. I just forget about the day and relax. Needles and Pine is very different, but equally relaxing with its woodsy forest scent created with pine nut oil, pine needles and cypress leaf infusion, and cedarwood oil. As a West Coast gal, I will always be won over by trees.

Lush Rub Rub Rub Scrub Review
I am a massive fan of the original Rub Rub Rub Shower Scrub that comes in a jar so when I saw a BAR version of this jasmine, mimosa and orange piece of heaven I knew I had to try it to compare. The new Rub Rub Rub* ($9.95 CDN) is made with finely milled sea salt, cupuacu and illipe butters and actual sakura flowers which make this exfoliator look beautiful! I prefer to use this scrub on dry skin first to get rid of those extra tough areas like my elbows, knees and feet. Not only does the sea salt exfoliate, but the butters make this bar glide even on dry skin!

Lush Salted Coconut Hand Scrub Review
Before every manicure, I always scrub my hands with a moisturizing hand scrub so I tend to go through them quickly. What I look for in a good scrub is a good exfoliant that leaves my hands soft, but not greasy as I often start painting my nails right away. The Salted Coconut Hand Scrub* ($15.95 CDN) is that perfect balance. Coconut can be a scent that is overdone, but not with this hand scrub! Made with finely milled sea salt, lemon infusion, organic silken tofu, argan oil and cupuacu butter, this hand scrub left my hands soft and primed for a night of nail painting. My cuticles looked better and there was not greasy film left on my nail beds. It also smells AMAZING.

Lush Golden Handshake Review
The Golden Handshake* ($4.95 CDN) absolutely fascinated me! I mean, is it a bath bomb, something to swirl around in the tub? Well, it’s actually a luxurious moisturizing hand treatment! Made with cupuacu and murumuru butters, swirl and dissolve this “handshake” in a bowl of warm water until the mixture becomes creamy. Now, get ready to soak your hands for 15 minutes and you will be left with delicate princess hands. I only wish this lasted for more treatments, but I love the fun way this treatment is made.

Have you tried any of these new Fall products from Lush? Which ones would you recommend?

SUBSCRIPTION BOX | November Vancity Box Review

After October's raving review (here) of the Vancity Box, I was more than delighted to be given the opportunity to review November's box as well especially now that we are into the holiday season trying to get gift ideas for our loved ones (or ourselves!). As I mentioned in my previous review, this is a purely artisanal subscription box that is filled with goods made by local companies and there were definitely some familiar favourites this month!

I already have two Vancouver Candle Co. soy candles in woodsy North Shore and Strathcona and absolutely adore them. Not only do I love the names, but the scents are ones that you will never tire of. Each candle is handmade and retails anywhere from $35-$40 at various stockists and are made in small batches of 50. I received Fairview and is one that I have been wanting to add to my collection as I adore citrus scents. These candles are wonderful gifts for visitors and even those of us who call Vancouver home.

This crocheted mug hug is by Amanda of Hooked on Crochet and while I think this is very cute, a mug hug has never really appealed to me so I will be gifting this to someone else. It is quite soft and makes me wish I had the skills to crochet!

The scent of lavender has grown on me incredibly this year as lavender essential oils soothed me quite a bit when I was flying a ton for work earlier this year. I now associate the scent of lavender with feeling relaxed which is the wonder of essential oils which is why I adore this Lavender Vanilla Sugar Scrub from Happily Ever Ava! Made with coconut oil, fair trade sugar, shea butter and dried lavender, this scrub is sure to make shower time oh so much more relaxing!

On the topic of aromatherapy comes the Sweet Sassafras Aromatherapy Spray from Vancouver-based Here & Now Botanicals which is a sweet blend of myrtle, sweet orange, frankincense, birch, benzoin and coriander. Just mist all around or on the body to calm the mind and feel just a little bit better.

This umbrella, designed by Deco Umbrella, was by far the most interesting product in November's Vancity Box as it LOOKS like a wine bottle, but actually contains...AN UMBRELLA! The umbrella is fairly small and compact and while the bottle may seem useless, it is supposed to serve as a place to put your dripping wet umbrella in addition to being decorative. I'm not gonna lie, it wasn't easy getting the umbrella back into the bottle...

Final verdict: The candle was my favourite product in the box and pretty much took care of the value of the Vancity Box! The other products were from companies I didn't even know existed right in my little city and now I'm off to check them out which is the whole idea behind this box. December's Vancity Box is currently all sold out, but there's still time to sign up for January's!

NAILS | Triple Coral Glitter Gradient #EssenceGelNails

The Essence Gel Nail Polish launch has been invigorating for me in many ways because I don't think I have done THIS many nail art posts in a very long time. For those that have been following me since I started blogging in 2011, I began as a nail art bloggers and would never have dreamed that I would be showing you all more than my talons. I probably take nail polish far too seriously, but I love pushing myself and trying new things. FOTDs are fun too, but sometimes I feel like there are only so many ways you can change your canvas aka your face. With nails, every time I take off my current design the slate truly is blank and can be transformed into ANYTHING.

I decided to finish of the month with a classic nail art design that is so fast and easy to do, but always looks amazing at the end - the glitter gradient!

Using 2 coats of Essence-Wild White Ways* as my base and my trusty makeup sponge, I sponged on Essence - Indian Summer* and Essence - Va Va Voom*, a bright creme neon coral, until the colours were opaque. It didn't take too long and I just needed a second round of sponging to even out the spacing of the three colours. To smooth out the bumpiness and give the edges their softness, I applied 2 coats of Essence Space Queen* (shown in photo) which is an iridescent glitter.

Using a wax pencil, I applied some square silver studs to add some edge to the look without distracting from the gradient we got goin' on.

Finally a coat of Essence The Gel Nail Polish Top Coat gave my nails some extra shine!

Is there any other nail art you would like to see me do/attempt? I will be doing some Christmas nail art, but I do get sick of snow, Santa and Christmas trees all month so I'm open to suggestions!

LIPS | Arbonne Intelligence Lip Treatment Review

Every morning before I apply any lipstick or lipgloss, I either apply a very minimal layer of chapstick or primer to make sure that my lip colour has a smooth surface to "hug" and because they feel so soothed. Primers have become my lip pacifier of sorts and with how often I use them, adding in skincare benefits? Mega bonus. The latest in lipcare comes in the form of the Arbonne Intelligence Lip Treatment* ($46.00 CDN) which contains a proprietary ingredient called Phytinol - blend of alfalfa, chicory extracts and retinoids that work to smooth skin texture. This treatment not only serves as a lip primer, but also improves overall lip volume.

There are a lot of ingredients in this treatment, but what I always zero in on when it comes to products that are referred to as "treatments" are usually the first 10 ingredients. In this case, I love the fact that the third ingredient is cocoa seed butter and the fifth, niacinamide which has been topically shown to reduce moisture loss (i.e. more voluminous-looking lips!). I noticed right away that this treatment smelled just like raspberries and because Arbonne products are phthalate-free, I attribute this scent to raspberry seed oil. Mmmm!

Ingredients: Aqua/Water/Eau, Glycerin, Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa) Seed Butter, Dimethicone, Niacinamide, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, VP/Hexadecene Copolymer, Hydrogenated Lecithin, Raspberry Seed Oil/Tocopheryl Succinate Aminopropanediol Esters, Carbomer, Acrylates/Carbamate Copolymer, Dimethicone/Vinyl Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Hydroxyethyl Acrylate/Sodium Acryloyldimethyl Taurate Copolymer, Sodium Carbomer, Avena Sativa (Oat) Kernel Extract, Zingiber Officinale (Ginger) Root Extract, Medicago Sativa (Alfalfa) Extract, Cichorium Intybus (Chicory) Root Extract, Arginine, Caffeine, Bisabolol, Tocopheryl Acetate, Dipalmitoyl Hydroxyproline, Octyldodecanol, Allantoin, Hydrogenated Phosphatidylcholine, Xanthan Gum, Palmitic Acid, Polysorbate 60, Sorbitan Isostearate, Sodium Hyaluronate, Copper Lysinate/Prolinate, Methylglucoside Phosphate, Disodium Acetyl Glucosamine Phosphate, Caprylyl Glycol, 1,2-Hexanediol, Sodium Hydroxide, Citric Acid, Benzyl Alcohol, Potassium Sorbate, Sodium Benzoate, Phenoxyethanol, Citrus Limon (Lemon) Peel Extract, Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange) Peel Extract, Rubus Idaeus (Raspberry) Fruit Extract, Citrus Grandis (Grapefruit) Fruit Extract, Gardenia Florida Flower Extract, Jasminum Officinale (Jasmine) Flower/Leaf Extract, Juniperus Virginana Wood Extract, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Flower/Leaf/Stem Extract, Mangifera Indica (Mango) Fruit Extract, Prunus Armeniaca (Apricot) Fruit Extract, Pyrus Malus (Apple) Fruit Extract, Rosa Damascena Flower Extract, Vanilla Planifolia Fruit Extract, Triethyl Citrate, Limonene, Linalool.

The fourth ingredient is dimethicone aka a type of silicone most commonly found in primers or products that "smooth out wrinkles" and blur imperfections. Though the treatment doesn't feel quite as silky as a traditional makeup primer, it does make the surface of my lips feel smooth and even immediately. It also has a cooling effect and feels quite soothing.

Lip Treatment + Smoothed Over Lipstick in Dream*

Lip Treatment
+ Smoothed Over Lipstick in Dream* + Lip Treatment + Glossed Over Lip Gloss in Mimosa*

Final verdict: I used this twice a day for two weeks and though it can be used alone, I found that it was most effective when used in conjunction with a lip product. On its own, it just was not hydrating enough. As for the promises of fuller and more youthful lips, well they definitely did look slightly "juicier" when I had it on. Whether it was noticeable, I'm not sure. Though this treatment is being marketed as skincare, I still view it as more of a makeup product because of the relatively high concentration of dimethicone with respect to the other ingredients. I'm on the fence about this product because at $46 for 10g, it is on the luxury side of pricing and I didn't notice a massive difference in the overall appearance of my lips. Though it did the job as a primer, as a treatment I'm not so sure.

SKINCARE | Gettin' Oiled Up with New Lipidol Skincare Oils!

From the makers of the cult healing oil Bio-Oil, come six new skincare oils for the face and body from Lipidol! We are now seeing how amazing oils are for the skin and that even oily skin types should embrace the fact that oils are good! The can both lift dirt and makeup from the skin and prevent stripping of the skin's natural oils. Lipidol combines this plus the healing aspect that Bio-Oil was so well-known for. Each skincare oil contains anti-flammatory ingredients like chamomile as well as essential oils shown to have functional skincare benefits. Sounds amazing, right? What's even more amazing is that nothing in the collection is more than $8.97. Crazy!

The Cleansing Face Oil* (125mL/$8.97 CDN) is made with medical grade liquid paraffin, a highly refined mineral oil, and is scented with rosemary and niaouli essential oils. I know many people get scared when they see this ingredient, but mineral oil that is highly refined is non-irritating and forms a barrier on the skin that aids in healing. While I don't have a problem with mineral oil, I know there are many opinions on whether this is toxic or not so I will leave the decision up to all of you! I used this as my first step of a double cleanse on dry skin and like most cleansing oils, this became a white creamy texture with the addition of water. After rinsing, my skin was left somewhere in the middle of squeaky clean and lightly hydrated. Some cleansing oils feel like there is a oil residue left behind, but not this one.

The Overnight Face Oil* (50mL/$8.97 CDN) is also made with medical grade liquid paraffin. This facial oil has a wonderful scent that is both comforting and refreshing. Lightly scented with ylang ylang and black pepper, this oil promises to replace skin's natural oils during the skin's nightly rejuvenation process. It is light in consistency, but does takes around 1.5 hours to absorb depending on how parched your skin is. It was so light that I poured out too much the first time and ended up having to do an overnight BODY oil treatment!

I fell so in love with the products while I was reviewing them that I went out to Wal-Mart and bought the Cleansing Body Oil* (200mL/$8.97 CDN) too! I have never used a cleansing BODY oil and I needed that green to complete my little Lipidol collection! The Cleansing Body Oil is soybean oil-based and lightly fragranced with lime essential oil which I love! Unlike the Cleansing Face Oil, the body oil needs to be applied to WET skin where it too starts to form a thick white cream. Not as thick as a soapy lather, but it was enough to make me feel like I was clean. I needed about 2-3 drops/limb so I did feel like I was using more than if I were to use a shower gel or bar soap, but what the body oil did do well was not to strip my skin of moisture. I found that I wasn't itching (literally) for the moisturizer right out of the shower like I normally am.

In this season of dry oils, I thought the After Shower Oil* (175mL/$8.97 CDN) would be similar, but it is actually a liquid paraffin-based body oil scented with soothing chamomile essential oil. Like all of the other Lipidol products, this shower oil is non-comodogenic and while it does take a couple of minutes to absorb into the skin, it was not too greasy feeling. Like most shower oils, this can be applied to wet skin followed by a towel pat down.

Final verdict: While I liked everything here, my favourite products would have to be the Cleansing Body and Face Oil. The pricing is to die for and thought there is also a shave and sunscreen oil, I think these four products will be the ones I use the most. If you have dry, sensitive skin or love cleansing oils, big thumbs up for Lipidol!

EVENT | Aveda Sessions #3 Botanical Therapy Treatment + GIVEAWAY!

I am an Aveda Vancouver Ambassador. All treatments are complimentary.

After going ash blonde during my last Aveda Institute visit four weeks ago, I have since learned that even with cutting down my hair washing to twice a week and using purple hair products, blonde can lose its brightness fairly quickly. For my third session with Aveda, my appointment was with Advanced Grad, Tatiana, who greeted me with a huge smile as well as a lovely head of hair!

We chatted about what we felt my hair needed and in addition to a tone-up, I mentioned my hair was feeling excessively dry. Tatiana immediately recommended the Botanical Therapy Treatment (starting at $40 CDN)) that is only available in salons as each treatment is curated to your particular hair needs. I will start this post by saying I am completely sold on whatever magical properties this BTT contains! I swear that I now have magical fairy hair.

In addition to the BTT, I also got my blonde toned up and kept the ash blonde I had done last month. What I found absolutely amazing about the BTT was that unlike other conditioning treatments that last all of a few days, this treatment lasts EIGHT FREAKIN' WEEKS! The treatment itself is a proprietary mix of essential oils and what I refer to as Aveda Fair Dust which I'm sure is an incredibly concentrated mix of conditioning ingredients. It is sprayed on (see empty bottle above) and takes just FIVE minutes to work. It is then rinsed out and right away, my hair felt plump and thick.

I thought the feeling wouldn't last, but it has been almost a month and my hair feels almost like before I started colouring it! I can curl my hair with a flat iron without having to oil it up to give the iron something to glide on! The BTT seems to have formed a protective layer around each strand of hair preventing both moisture-loss and further external damage. It is truly amazing how weeks later, my hair is still benefitting from this treatment.

I can't keep this Aveda fun all to myself so as an early Christmas present, the Aveda Institute is offering the magical Botanical Therapy Treatment to one Cosmetic Proof reader!

Terms of the Giveaway

  • Valid for Vancouver, Calgary, Winnipeg and Toronto Aveda Institute locations
  • Giveaway ends on November 30th, 2015 at 11:59pm
  • The winner will have 48 hours to reply once they are contacted

NAILS | Dotticure Time with #EssenceGelNails

I am having a blast with the new Essence Gel Nail Polishes and this month I am putting these polishes to the test to see how resilient they really are. As we speak, I have had the below dotticure on my nails since Friday night and there is very minimal chipping. The right hand has two chips and the left one. Though I don't work with rocks, I do use my hands a lot, sometimes in He-Man sort of ways so nail polish usually will start to really chip at this point in the week. My nails still look pretty fabulous and I am totally feeling this dotticure!

When it comes to the nail art world, giving credit whenever you can is highly applauded so while I was doing the incredibly girly thing of browsing Pinterest, I came across this nail design and thought, "WOW! I have to try this!"

For my base colour, I used two coats of the beautifully black Essence - Black is Back*, followed by dotting large white centers using Essence - Wild White Ways*.

At an almost snail-like pace, I slowly dotted Essence - Indian Summer*, a creamy coral, Essence - Don't Be Shy*, a light neon yellow-green, and then Wild White Ways with the smallest dotting tool I own.

I followed with the Essence Gel Polish Top Coat* which is super shiny and smooth. Two VERY important qualities in a top coat! A bad top coat can ruin hours of hard work!

Have you tried this new Essence formula yet? Tell me, do you not love it?!

MAKEUP LOOK | Fall Freshness with Guerlain KissKiss RoseLip and Rose Aux Joues Tendre Blush Review & Swatches

I absolutely love the inspiration behind this season's Guerlain Bloom of Rose Collection as it revolves around a 19th century discovery of a liquid tint that was gently dabbed onto the lips and cheeks. In 1918, Guerlain launched Roselip, which was the first solid lip colour to be sold in a jar and now the story continues with a collection that embodies natural shades to maintain a beautiful healthy glow - just like a rose. To pull away from all of the smoky Fall eyes I've been doing, I decided to channel the fresh faced makeup looks from Korea using the new KissKiss RoseLip Hydrating & Plumping Tinted Lip Balm* ($41.00 CDN) and Rose Aux Joues Tender Blush* ($57.00 CDN).

Coming in 6 shades, all inspired by bouquets of flowers, t
he KissKiss Roselip Lip Balm is sheer, hydrating and smooth to the touch because of jojoba seed oil. There is also rose water in the formulation, but as this ingredient sits about halfway down the list the question of whether it actually has an effect on the lips is questionable.

Guerlain's packaging is always one of my favourites as this hefty white lacquered tube feels like pure luxury with its accents of gold.

R373 Pink Me Up smells just like roses and is SUPER smooth on the lips. It literally just glides while filling and plumping any lackluster areas on the lips. The colour really is quite sheer and I found that this was really best as a "my lips, but better" product.

The Rose aux Joues Tender Blush comes in 6 iconic shades and is a relaunch of Guerlain's signature blush offerings. With pigments that enhance your natural glow as well as "pink booster" pigments that allow natural red light to blend with the skin and enhance rosiness, radiance is readily achievable.

I received the shade 06 Pink Me Up and it is so sweet-looking! When I wear it, I look like I can do no wrong!

Burberry Effortless Eyebrow Definer in No.3 Ash Brown*

Guerlain Petrouchka Palette* making sure to use the highlight shade on the lower lash line to highlight the "aegyo sal" (eye bags)

Line lower waterline with Urban Decay's 24/7 Glide On Eye Pencil in Venus and upper lashline with Guerlain Eyeliner in Bleu Outremer.

Add Guerlain's Cils D'Enfer Maxi Lash Mascara in Navy Blue* and your favourite criss-cross false lashes.

Guerlain Rose aux Joues Tender Blush in 06 Pink Me Up*

R373 Pink Me Up*

Final verdict: While I loved this natural look and the inspiration behind Guerlain's Fall collection, I would much rather invest in their more pigmented lip colours in the KissKiss Lipstick line instead of something sheer like Roselip. The blush, I adore and would love to get a darker shade to go with the smoky eyes I have been wearing lately for fall.
