Having just launched their 100% raw, cold pressed coconut oil in Sephora stores, Skinny & Co. Coconut Oil sets itself apart by being the only alkaline coconut oil (pH 7.8) on the market and is as close to a raw coconut as you can get! Why is having an alkaline or higher pH good? The alkaline food diet is all about making sure that our bodies stay at a happy pH of 7.3-7.45. A high consumption of certain foods like coffee are quite acidic and it is thought that we get sick when our body's ideal pH levels are thrown out of whack. While I don't quite believe in the science of the alkaline diet (our bodies adhere to the principles of homeostasis to ensure that everything remains peachy keen), the foods that you are meant to eat while on an alkaline diet are actually quite good for you(fruits, vegetables and no processed foods) so THAT I can believe.
Skinny & Co. uses a patent-pending Nutralock system that uses absolutely no heat to extract the oil from the coconuts and instead cools the oil out. All coconuts used to make Skinny & Co. coconut oil are wild harvested and hand-picked from Vietnam. Once cracked open, the coconut meat is extracted and placed in a dehumidifying Nutralock System that is able to extract the moisture out of the coconut without using heat. This leaves all of the nutritional value intact AND extracts more oil.
Each 16 oz jar of Skinny Coconut Oil contains 12 coconuts and takes 3x as long to process than other coconut oils on the market. I was expecting this product to smell like the typical roasted coconut that I have come to know in food, but it is in fact much more subtle. It still smells delicious and I was quite torn with how to use it first! Do I eat it, slather it on my face or both?!
The uses for coconut oil seem endless (here) and while I will admit that I could have been more adventurous with how I used this product, I stuck with the basics. As a makeup remover/oil cleanser, it worked quite well, but must be wiped off with tissue instead of water. I've used a little on the ends of my hair and on my legs, which worked surprisingly well. It absorbed incredibly quickly and didn't leave me feeling greasy.
I used it to make pineapple and chicken stirfry the other night and pretty much blew through my 2oz jar* ($15.00 CDN)! I came home from work today to find my hubby conditioning his leather Vibergs with Skinny Coconut Oil and then just the other day, I found Hugo licking the oil right out of the jar! It turns out that coconut oil is awesome for pets too!
Final verdict: Hmmm, I really don't know if I am fully converted yet. This really does smell quite a bit better than the 100% virgin coconut oil I picked up from Loblaws, but with the amount I had to use for the stirfry, I don't know if I will be using this for eating purposes. I would much rather use it for skin, hair and makeup removal since it really is an all-purpose product that worked better than I thought it would.
